Ingredients:
- 4 tbsp coriander seeds
- 1 tbsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp fenugreek seeds
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 4-5 dried red chilies
- 1 inch cinnamon stick
- 4-5 cloves
- 2-3 cardamom pods
- 1 cup rice
- 1/2 cup split pigeon peas (toor dal)
- 2 carrots, chopped
- 1 small potato, chopped
- 1/2 cup green beans, chopped
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 small tomato, chopped
- 2 tbsp tamarind paste
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- Salt to taste
- 3 tbsp ghee or oil
- 1/4 cup roasted cashews (optional)
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander leaves
Instructions:
Dry roast all the ingredients for the spice mix until fragrant. Grind them into a fine powder using a blender or spice grinder. Keep the spice mix aside.
Wash the rice and dal together in a large bowl. Soak them in water for 30 minutes.
Heat ghee or oil in a pressure cooker or large pot. Add onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
Add chopped vegetables and sauté for a few minutes.
Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, tamarind paste, salt, and ground spice mix. Mix well.
Add soaked rice and dal to the mixture. Mix well.
Add 5 cups of water to the mixture and stir well.
Pressure cook for 4-5 whistles or cook in a pot until the rice and dal are soft and fully cooked.
Once the pressure is released, open the cooker and mix the bisi bele bath well.
Garnish with roasted cashews (optional) and chopped fresh coriander leaves.
Serve hot with papadum, raita, or chips.
